Flight tickets
First of all, it is still not advisable to buy Varig tickets, because
they still sell lots of tickets for flights they don't fly (yet).
Varig
is a Brazilian flight
company with still extreme financial problems. Recently they went
through a restart, and hopefully soon their tickets will be trustworthy
again.
Some possibilities of flight-routes:
- The obvious way to go to Porto Alegre (POA) is going to São Paulo
and from there connecting to Porto Alegre. In São Paulo there are
two airports: Guarulhos and Congonhas. GUA (Guarulhos), is the international
one, and CNG (Congonhas) is exclusive for domestic flights. It is
therefore important to be careful that, in case your connection leaves
from the other airport, that you are aware of this, and that you have
sufficient time for transfer. It should take around 1 hour to get
from one airport to the other with the airport-bus. This bus should
leave each hour, but we advice you to verify this with your flight
company.
- You might find it interesting to pass by Foz de Iguaçu (which are
the waterfalls at the point where the frontiers of Brazil, Argentina
and Paraguay meet each other), before or after going to Porto Alegre.
There are direct flights for good prices going between Foz de Iguaçu,
Porto Alegre, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In stead of going by plane,
one can also go From Iguaçu to Porto Alegre by bus. The bus will take
a night, but they can be very comfortable, and the price is much lower.
- It is also possible to find much cheaper tickets to Buenos Aires,
which is generally around EUR 200 cheaper then flying directly to
Porto Alegre. In this case, you could stay there for some days and
then either take a plane to Porto Alegre or a bus (again, very nice
buses for small prices!). The bus ride takes around 12 hours, meaning
that when you leave in the evening from Buenos Aires, you arrive in
Porto Alegre the next morning.
If you would like professional help for making flight reservation
(internal flights as well as international), we can recommend you
a person that we know for a long time, Loiva Bertol,
who works at a tourist agency (Vasques Turismo) in Porto Alegre. We
have already informed her that there might be some people from the
wedding, non-Portuguese speakers, contacted her for some technical
support, flight reservations etc.
