Research Project

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) kill virus-infected and tumor cells with very high specificity and play a critical role during an immune response. There has been increased interest in adoptive transfer of CTLs to treat tumor/viral infection. However, the underlying mechanisms of CTL-target cell interactions, the CTL-mediated killing rate, and variation of killing efficiency with effector and target cell densities remain poorly understood.

My research focus on modeling CTL-mediated killing of target cells to understand the mechanisms of CTL intreactions and to estimate CTL killing rate of target cells. For this purpose, I employ a combination of mechanistic and simulation models to determine how the CTL-target interaction mechanisms influence the CTL-mediated killing rates. Additionally, I develop mathematical models to analyse the data from the cytotoxicity experiments.
