From 1993 till 1998 I studied biology at the university of Utrecht specializing in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics. From 1998 till 2002 I performed my PhD research on comperative genome analysis and genome evolution in the group of Peer Bork at EMBL (Heidelberg, Germany) From 2002 till 2005 I worked as a post-doc and then as a VENI post-doc in Martijn Huynen's Comparative Genomics group at the RIMLS (then NCMLS) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In 2006 I moved to Utrecht University as associate professor where I founded the Evolutionary Genomics and Integrative Bioinformatics group as part of Theoretical biology and Bioinformatics in the Department of Biology at Utrecht University. As of 2014 I am appointed as professor in bioinformatics and chair of the executive board of the Utrecht Bioinformatics Center.
